Today we presented our final outcome to the group. Here is our plan for the presentation:

Summarise the key idea and intention of your project.

In an article by Very Well Mind, they write: “Color is a powerful communication tool and can be used to signal action, influence mood, and even influence physiological reactions. Certain colours have been associated with increased blood pressure, increased metabolism, and eyestrain”. Our project aims to tackle this idea and flip certain colour associations on its head: for example, switching the colours red and white on an angel and devil, using purples on protagonists and light pastel colours on villains, and switching the colours on well-known brands. We thought the topic of colour association psychology would be worth discussing and thinking about through a publication; where the visuals come to life and are laid out in a clear and engaging way.

Define the process and how you arrived at your outcome.

To begin, our group went around discussing what our interests are and how we could combine them. I have an interest in coping with grief, Abby in religion, Elif the culture industry and Jocelyn taste visualisation. We talked about the afterlife and dealing with grief. We questioned how we could visualise the sensations of grief? Maybe through metaphors, textures, or colours? We discussed different uses for colours, such as Baker-Miller pink used in prisons to calm people down. Maybe we could change the concept of this and play around with the colour associations.

Cover important research methods.

For this project, most of our research was theoretical; turning towards academic articles to help build our knowledge on the topic. We looked at colour psychology diagrams as well as the history of colour. Colour associations are deeply culturally influenced. For example, at a Chinese wedding, the bride wears a traditional red dress to evoke good luck and happiness. On the other hand, a bride wearing white at their wedding is a custom in the United States.

Share group dynamics, roles and how you worked as a team.

We coordinated ourselves by expertise: Abby was fashion communication, Jocelyn graphic design, Bella photography and Elif graphic design. Jocelyn focused on brand logos and switched the colours, Abby used colours focusing on religious garments, and Bella photographed an angel and devil and switched the colours. Finally, Elif pulled together all the works and organized them into a well-presented publication.

Share key learning moments during the project.

One of the most important moments during the project is when we came together and discussed our interests and linked them together. We were able to tie in all of our desired topics into one and had a fantastic and productive conversation.

Decide how you will contribute to the presentation.

I will start by summarising the key idea and intention as well as the process and how we arrived at our outcome. Abby will then go on to talk about our research methods and Elif the outcome and group dynamics.

At the end of the presentation, we gained quite a lot of feedback, such as maybe doing an experiment on how different people react to different colours, particularly when they have been reversed. We also discussed how, for example, many cultures have different associations with colour. In Western culture, red is seen as evil as it connects to the devil; however, in China, it is seen as lucky. This was really interesting to think about and develop. All-in-all this project was really fun, we worked nicely as a group, and the final outcome was super exciting.
